Privacy

à portée is a product of Ammil Industries Ltd., a British Columbia company. Here’s what we collect when you use the map and an à portée account, what we use it for, and who else receives it.

The person responsible for privacy at à portée is Christian Miles. Questions, and requests to see, correct or delete information about you, go to christian@aportee.ca.

  • You can use the map without an account. Signing in is free and asks only for an email address.
  • The site sets cookies only when you sign in, to keep you signed in.
  • Visits are counted with an analytics service that does not use cookies. It records the pages you view and the part of the map you look at.
  • Text typed into the search box is sent from your browser to a third-party geocoder (Stadia Maps) to find addresses, so that service sees your IP address.
  • Feedback you send is stored together with the map position it was sent from.
  • à portée emails you about the product only if you ask it to, and you can stop at any time.
  • à portée does not sell personal information.

A free account gives you plus: more map views, more travel options and saved maps. To create one, or to sign in, you give your email address and à portée emails you a sign-in link.

What an account stores: your email address, the organisation you name if you give one, the language you signed up in, the page you signed up from, when the account was created and when you last signed in, and whether you asked for product updates (with the date and the version of the wording you agreed to).

Saved views. When you save a view of the map, your account keeps its link (the place and zoom, the amenities and travel choices, the map style and, if one is placed, the pin and its label), its name, the data release, a small picture of the map and when you saved, changed and last opened it. If you share a view, anyone with its link can open that map, without the pin unless you choose to include it, and without your email address or your other views; turning sharing off stops the link working. Deleting a view, or your account, removes it.

Shared map links. A travel-time link you copy while signed in carries a code that lets the person who opens it see the same map for 90 days. The code holds only which map files it opens and when it expires.

Sign-in links are sent through Cloudflare’s email service from aportee.ca. Each link works once and expires after 15 minutes. à portée stores only a scrambled form of the link’s code, never the code itself.

Cookies. Signing in sets cookies that keep you signed in for up to 90 days and open the map in its signed-in layout, and one that lasts two minutes so the sign-in can be counted in the visit statistics. None of them identifies you to anyone else, and they are removed when you sign out or delete your account.

Stopping bots. The sign-in form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to prevent misuse, and the number of sign-in links requested is limited for a day.

Product updates are emailed only if you tick the box when you sign up or turn them on from your account page. You can turn them off on your account page or with the link in any update. Sign-in links are sent whether or not you ask for updates.

Deleting your account. Your account page has a “Delete my account” button. It removes your account, your sessions and any sign-in links still outstanding, straight away.

Accounts and feedback are stored by Cloudflare in North America, and may be stored outside Canada.

Paying for à portée pro. à portée pro is paid for through Stripe, which Ammil Industries Ltd. uses to take card payments. The card number goes to Stripe on Stripe’s own checkout page and never reaches à portée. Stripe keeps your name, email address, billing address and payment history to bill you and to send receipts, under Stripe’s privacy policy. à portée keeps only what it needs to know whether you are on à portée pro: the Stripe customer and subscription numbers, the subscription’s status and when the paid month ends. Deleting your account cancels the subscription and removes these; Stripe keeps its payment records as the law requires.

Page views and some actions on the map, such as choosing an amenity or sharing a link, are counted with Seline, an analytics service that does not use cookies. The counts include the page address, the position and zoom of the map, and the amenities selected. They show which places and destinations people look at.

As you type in the search box, the text is matched against a list of Canadian cities and towns built into the page. Once you have typed three or more characters, the text is also sent from your browser to Stadia Maps, an address search service. Stadia Maps receives the search text, the map’s centre point and your IP address, as any web service does. The same applies when you click the map and à portée asks Stadia Maps for the address at that spot. à portée does not keep the results of address searches or of these lookups.

When you open the map without a place in the link, it asks à portée’s server which Canadian city to start on. The server reads the approximate location that Cloudflare derives from your IP address for every request (country and a coarse latitude and longitude), picks the nearest city from the map’s built-in list, and answers with that city only, or with nothing when your connection is from outside Canada. We keep your IP address and the coordinates only in the short-lived request logs described under Service providers.

Explore near me asks your browser for your location and moves the map there. The location stays in your browser; the new map position is then included in the visit counts described above.

Showing walking routes from a point sends the coordinates of that point to à portée’s routing service. It answers and keeps no record of them beyond the short-lived request logs described under Service providers.

When you send feedback, à portée stores:

  • what you wrote, and your email address if you give one;
  • the page address, the map position and zoom, and the selected amenities;
  • the language and the data version;
  • details of the place or block the feedback is about;
  • the country your connection comes from, and your browser’s user agent.

The team is notified so that someone can respond, and the feedback is kept so the team can act on it and follow up. Email christian@aportee.ca to have it deleted.

So that someone can respond, à portée posts a message to the team’s private Slack workspace when:

  • someone asks for a sign-in link for an address that has no account yet, or the link’s email fails: the email address, the page it was asked from, the language, how many links that address asked for in the last 15 minutes, any email error, and the time;
  • someone creates an account: their email address, the organisation if they give one, the page they signed up from, the language and the time;
  • someone subscribes to à portée pro: their email address, the language, the Stripe subscription number and the start time;
  • someone sends feedback or a message from the contact form: the message, the email address if they give one, the place it’s about (its name, kind and address) if any, the country the connection comes from, the language, the data version, the page it was sent from with a link to that map position, and the time.

Only the team sees these messages. Slack stores and processes them for us, as our service provider, under Slack’s privacy policy.

à portée uses these services to run the site. Each receives only what it needs for its job, including your IP address, as with any web request.

  • Cloudflare: hosting, accounts and feedback storage, sign-in emails and Turnstile. Cloudflare handles every request, and à portée keeps short-lived request logs to find and fix errors.
  • Fly.io: map images and walking routes.
  • Stadia Maps: address search.
  • Seline: visit counts.
  • Slack: notifying the team of sign-in links for new addresses, new accounts, à portée pro subscriptions, feedback (Notifications to the team).

Some map layers are loaded by your browser straight from their providers, which see the area of the map requested: OpenFreeMap for the base map, Esri for satellite imagery and Mapterhorn for 3D terrain (each only when that layer is on), and Google Fonts for the typefaces on the atlas pages.

Besides the sign-in cookies above, the site stores a few settings in your browser’s local storage: whether you have closed the introduction, and the light or dark theme chosen in the documentation or the signed-in map, and whether this browser has opened the signed-in map before. None of them is sent anywhere. A shared map link’s code is kept in the tab’s session storage, and is sent only with the map files it opens.

You can ask to see the personal information à portée holds about you, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing to christian@aportee.ca. If you are not satisfied with the answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, to the Commission d’accès à l’information.

à portée does not sell or rent personal information. It may publish statistics about how the map is used, such as how often each kind of destination is selected, in a form that does not identify anyone. This page will be updated before any change to how information is collected or shared takes effect.
