What is this?
à portée is French for within reach. It maps how far the nearest everyday amenities are on foot, by bike and by transit, including grocery stores, playgrounds, pharmacies and more, for every inhabited block with a computed time.
How do I read it?
Each block is shaded by the time it takes to walk, cycle or take transit to the amenities you've selected, to match the farthest one. Walking and cycling times take hills into account.
Who made it?
👋Hey! I’m Christian Miles, and à portée is the perfect blend of the things I’m interested in: vibrant communities, network maps and interactive data interfaces.
I hope à portée gives people across Canada a clearer sense of what's within reach. I'd love to hear how you use it – get in touch.
Where's the data from?
Destinations come from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps, matched with tools adapted from Nat Henry's OpenPOIs. Block geography and population come fromStatistics Canada's 2021 Census. Every source is listed onSources and licences. Amenity data and routing are refreshed monthly; the site was last updated on October 8, 2026.
Anything else?
Inspired by and indebted to Nat Henry's close.city and open-source work.
Base-map tiles are graciously provided by OpenFreeMap.
